Session Summary: The ability of employees to retire is a hot topic among both public sector employees and employers. As public entities redesign their pension plans and move toward a shared risk approach or Hybrid plans, the readiness of employees to retire has become paramount. This session will examine various aspects of retirement plan design and the impact they have on retirement readiness. Also, we’ll analyze the indirect impact of employees not being prepared. Finally, we’ll provide strategies to improve employees’ retirement readiness.

Instructors

David Staffiera, CEBS

David is a Senior Client Services Consultant in Aon’s Retirement & Investment practice. He works with current and new client teams as an expert technical resource to ensure services are delivered in a consistent, quality-driven manner.

David started at Aon in 1997 providing technical and administrative support to large, Fortune 100 administration clients. Over the past 20+ years, he has supported a variety of clients, in terms of both size and industry, from implementation through ongoing delivery.

David has developed and implemented many best-practice initiatives to enhance and streamline Aon’s delivery of retirement services - with a particular focus on the overall employee experience and ensuring accurate information transfer of our clients’ plan provisions and processes.

David received his bachelor of science in finance and human resource management from Miami University. He is also a Certified Employee Benefits Specialist (CEBS).

Eric Atwater, FSA, FCA, EA

Eric J. Atwater is a Partner and leader of Aon’s Public Sector Retirement practice. In his role as practice leader, he is responsible for client servicing, development of innovative solutions, thought leadership and adherence to professional and overall quality assurance standards. Eric serves, or has served, as consulting actuary and/or account executive to a variety of public entities and specializes in funding and non-traditional solutions for public Pension and Other Post Employment Benefit (OPEB) plans.

Mr. Atwater graduated with honors from Georgia State University in 1998, where he received a BBA with a concentration in Actuarial Science. He is a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries, a Fellow of the Conference of Consulting Actuaries, a Member of the American Academy of Actuaries and an Enrolled Actuary. He has also passed the first two levels of the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) exam and is in the process of becoming a charter holder to further his expertise of Pension and OPEB plan assets.

He is a former board member for International Association of Black Actuaries (IABA) and has worked with Atlanta Public Schools to increase awareness of the actuarial profession.  Mr. Atwater is a regular speaker at industry conferences and has been quoted in pension‑related articles in the Wall Street Journal, Washington Post and several local newspapers.

He’s a youth basketball coach and routinely volunteers for a variety of organizations including 7 Bridges to Recovery. He and his team helped prepare, and deliver, over 300 lunches for the homeless. 

Grace Lattyak, FSA, EA, MAAA

Grace is a Partner at Aon with over fifteen years of experience assisting companies in the financial management and design of their pension, defined contribution, and retiree

health programs. Grace sits on Aon’s U.S. National Actuarial Resource Team, responsible for the technical training of all of Aon’s U.S. credentialed actuaries as well as staying connected with external industry organizations.

Grace oversees Aon’s Retirement Income Adequacy research, The Real Deal, and its application to plan sponsors as they seek to improve the retirement outcomes for their employees. She also helps clients understand the competitiveness of their total benefits packages through Aon’s Benefit Index analysis.

Grace received her B.S.B.A. degree in Actuarial Science from Drake University.

Grace actively volunteers in professional organizations such as the American Academy of Actuaries and the Society of Actuary.
